A few days ago,
when my family was eating out there were
hearing-impaired people next to our table.
며칠 전,
가족과 함께 한 외식자리 옆 테이블에
청각장애인들이 앉아계셨습니다.
Being familiar with oral language,
I believed that using hands for conversation
would be inconvenient. But they delightfully
enjoyed their meal talking with one another,
which warmed my heart.
입으로 하는 언어에 익숙한 저는
손의 대화가 불편할 것이라 생각했는데
너무도 즐겁게 식사하시면서
대화하는 그분들의 모습을 보며
제 마음도 흐뭇했답니다.
One of them took out a mobile phone.
How can he be on the phone if he cannot hear?
But my question was groundless
since his phone was a video phone.
그 중 한 분이 휴대폰을 꺼내셨습니다.
들리지도 않는데 어떻게 전화를?
이라는 제 생각은 기우였습니다.
그 분은 전화는 영상폰이었던 것입니다.
I have been using a phone with only
a camera function for about 4 years.
It is not only because I don't feel
the necessity for a better device,
but also because I feel that changing phones
too often is over-consumption.
저는 카메라만 겨우 되는 핸드폰을
4년째 사용하고 있습니다.
더 좋은 기계의 필요를 못 느끼기도 하지만
쉽게 폰을 바꾸는 것이 과소비로 느껴져서입니다.
Whenever I see people buying a new phone
so quickly upon each launching,
and even as I saw the video phone launched
in the market, I thought, "How wasteful it is?
What good is a video phone if talking is enough."
새로운 핸드폰이 나올 때마다
쉽게쉽게 기계를 바꾸는 사람들을 보면서
영상폰이 나왔을 때에도 같은 생각을 했습니다.
“불필요한 소비가 또 늘어나겠군.
통화만 하면 되지, 볼 것까지야...”
Now I see science development becomes a great
help for whom I'd never thought of.
그러나 과학의 발달은
생각지도 못한 분들께 도움이 되네요.
There are lots of inconveniences for disabled
people which ordinary people do not notice.
일반인들은 그냥 지나칠 일도,
장애인들에게는 많이 불편한 점이 많습니다.
The video phone was not originally developed
for hearing-impaired people, When we, however,
think about it from their point of view,
I think it would be a more comfortable
and happier society.
청각장애인들을 위해 영상폰이 개발되지는 않았겠지만
우리가 어떤 일들 하면서
한번쯤 그분들의 입장에서 생각해 본다면
함께 편리하고 행복한 사회를
만들어갈 수 있지 않을까 생각해봅니다.
