My mother got operations for her back
three times and cannot be operated anymore now.
어머니는 허리를 세 번이나 수술하시고
이제는 더 이상 수술을 할 수 없단다.
She raised her five children on the 10th
floor of Zugong Apartment like a mother magpie
who built a nest for her babies. She spends
her days looking out of the window, since her
children grew up and went away.
주공아파트 10층에서 둥지를 튼 까치어미처럼
오남매를 모두 키워 보내고
늘 창문 밖만 바라보며 사신단다.
She spreads out cataplasm on the cold floor
and patches them on her back, rolling on the
floor, whenever she her back aches.
허리에 심한 통증이 오면
파스를 차가운 방에 깔아놓고
굼벵이처럼 뒹굴면서 붙이신단다.
She may roll on the floor today, calling her
five children's names.
오남매 이름을 애타게 부르시면서
오늘도 방바닥을 구르실 어머니
She said with a bright smile that the cataplasm
smelled like menthol when she put it on her back.
The cataplasm pays for her instead of me.
통증이 일 때마다 내가 지은 죄 값으로
사서 붙이는 파스가 그렇게도 고마워서
박하향기가 난다며 환히 웃으시는 어머니!
My mother keeps herself from dying until
I return to her.
아, 내가 어머니에게 갈 때까지...
죽음을 밀어내고 계신 우리 어머니!
