Han Il San, aged 66 has been taking care of
his comatose wife, Kim Bok Rye (65) for eight years.
He has looked after his wife devotedly with the hope
in his heart that she would wake up one day.
한일산(66)씨는 식물인간 아내 김복례(65)씨를
8년째 돌본다.
그동안 한 씨는 아내가 깨어날 것이라는 희망을 품고
모든 정성을 다해 아내를 간호했다.
He washes her daily, exercise together, feeds
her nourishing meals made from eight nutritional
ingredients, and keeps an eye on her bed, even
while she sleeps, to see if he can detect
the faintest signs of consciousness.
매일 목욕을 시키고 운동을 함께 하는 것은 물론
8가지 재료가 들어간 영양식을 준비해 먹이고,
자다가도 작은 기척이라도 들리면 일어나
아내의 잠자리를 봐준다.
Above all these,
Mr. Han shows his love for his wife by whispering
sentimental words such as “Please wake up, beauty,
the most beautiful lady in Korea.”
“Let’s die together after a long life.”
무엇보다 한 씨는
"잠깨요 예쁜 사람, 대한민국에서 제일 예쁜 사람"
"오래 살다가 나하고 같이 가" 라고
다정다감한 말을 속삭이며
아내에게 자신의 사랑을 표현한다.
The reason for his devoted care is because of
the endeavor he received from his wife.
그가 지극정성으로 병간호를 하게 된 이유는
자신을 위해 헌신했던 아내의 노력 때문이다.
In 1993, Mr. Han was diagnosed with liver cancer.
The doctor said there was no hope for
his recovery, but his wife didn’t give up.
She gave of herself, taking care of him, and
finally, he miraculously recovered.
지난 93년 한 씨는 간암판정을 받았다.
병원 의사도 손을 놓았던 남편을 아내는 포기하지 않았다.
아내는 헌신적으로 남편을 간호했고
결국 그는 기적적으로 완치되었다.
Mr. Han regained his life thanks to her love, but
She, who had been selling seaweed to pay medical
expenses, went into a coma after a car accident,
and she has been looked after by him.
아내의 사랑으로 한 씨는 새 삶을 되찾았지만
병원비를 갚기 위해 해초를 팔던 아내는
교통사고로 식물인간이 되어
남편의 병간호를 받는 처지가 됐다.

“She got hurt because of me and has just les here.

"저 때문에 아내가 몸을 다쳐서 이렇게 누워있는데
제가 아무리 잘한다고 해도
그 사랑을 어찌 다 보답하겠어요.
너무 억울하잖아요. 나 때문에 이렇게 됐다는 게..."
누워있는 아내를 생각하며
남편은 안타까움에 눈물만 흘렸다.
The only thing he wishes now is for a miracle
to help her to her as one did for him.
지금 그가 바라는 것은 오직 하나,
자신을 낫게 한 기적이 아내에게도 일어나는 것이다.

The wife moved her arms and legs little by little,

아내를 보며 남편은 가슴속 깊이
묻어뒀던 말을 꺼냈다.
“Just a word,
I haven’t heard a word for eight years.
I don’t want anything, just a word from her.”
"말 한마디,
지금 우리가 8년 동안 말 한 마디 못 듣고 살잖아요.
말 한 마디만 했으면 원이 없겠어요."
