There was an episode on one Christmas day
during the Second World War.

On Christmas Eve,
French and German armies confronted each other
across a small river.
12월24일 성탄 전야에 프랑스군과 독일군이
작은 강을 사이에 두고 대치하고 있었습니다.
The night on the dreadful battlefield was
silent and lonesome under the starry sky.
살벌한 전쟁터의 한 밤은 아롱지는
별빛으로 인해 고요하고 적막했지요.
The French army in a trench whistled a
Christmas carol quietly, longing for his hometown.
참호 속에 앉았던 한 프랑스 병사가
고향을 생각하며 무심코 낮은 휘파람 소리로
성탄 캐롤을 불렀습니다.
The sound spread across the river.
The sorrowful and gentle tune soon made
the German soldiers across the river homesick.
휘파람 소리가 강 주변에 잔잔히 울려 퍼졌고
그 애달프고 잔잔한 휘파람은
이내 건너편 독일 병사의 마음을
향수에 잠겨버리게 했습니다.
Then a German soldier repeated
the melodies he heard.
독일병사가 그 멜로디를 따라
입술을 움직이고 있었던 것이었지요.
Finally, the singing of Christmas carols of
both armies echoed on both sides of the river.
잠시 후 아군과 적군의 캐롤 멜로디가
함께 강을 맴돌고 있었습니다.
All of the soldiers sang Christmas carols in unison.
The silent and lonesome river became
the stage for a carol concert.
It was Christmas eve and there was
peace between friend and foe.
고향의 성탄을 그리워하던 모든 병사들이
이 합창의 멜로디를 듣고는
다 함께 부르게 되었고 고요하고 적막한 강은
캐롤의 향연이 되었습니다.
아군도 적도 없는 성탄의 밤이었지요.
The war disappeared from their minds and
Christmas and the longing for home
were their only thoughts.
모두가 서로 피 흘려야 하는
병사로서의 모습은 사라지고
오직 성탄을 축하하며 그리워하는
애절 어린 사람의 마음만 남아 있게 되었습니다. |
