A barber took on a young apprentice to train.
The apprentice practiced his barbering
skill for three months and finally
got his first customer.
한 이발사가 자신의 기술을 전수하기 위해
젊은 도제를 한 명 들였다.
젊은 도제는 3개월 동안 열심히 이발 기술을 익혔고
드디어 첫 번째 손님을 맞이하게 되었다.
He cut his customer's hair as best as he could.
However, the customer after seeing his haircut
in the mirror grumbled.
그는 그 동안 배운 기술을 최대한 발휘하여
첫 번째 손님의 머리를 열심히 깎았다.
그러나 거울로 자신의 머리 모양을 확인한 손님은
투덜거리듯 말했다.
"It's too long"
The apprentice couldn't respond.
Then, the barber said to the customer with a smile.
"머리가 너무 길지 않나요?"
초보 이발사는 손님의 말에 아무런 답변도 하지 못했다.
그러자 그를 가르쳤던 이발사가 웃으면서 말했다.
"You might look silly if your hair is too short.
This long hairstyle matches you well."
When the customer heard this,
he looked happy and left.
"머리가 너무 짧으면 경박해 보인답니다.
손님에게는 긴 머리가 아주 잘 어울리는 걸요."
그 말을 들은 손님은 금방 기분이 좋아져서 돌아갔다.
The second customer came in.
The second customer didn't look satisfied
after seeing his haircut in the mirror and said.
"Isn't it too short?"
The apprentice was unable to reply.
The barber next to him said again.
두 번째 손님이 들어왔다.
이발이 끝나고 거울을 본 손님은
마음에 들지 않는 듯 말했다.
"너무 짧게 자른 것 아닌가요?"
초보 이발사는 이번에도
역시 아무런 대꾸를 하지 못했다.
옆에 있던 이발사가 다시 거들며 말했다.
"The short hair makes you look vigorous and honest."
The second customer was satisfied and left.
"짧은 머리는 긴 머리보다
훨씬 경쾌하고 정직해 보인답니다."
이번에도 손님은 매우 흡족한 기분으로 돌아갔다.
The third customer came in.
When he finished his haircut,
he appeared satisfied with his hairstyle
but complained while paying.
"It took too long to cut my hair."
세 번째 손님이 왔다.
이발이 끝나고 거울을 본 손님은
머리 모양은 무척 마음에 들어 했지만,
막상 돈을 낼 때는 불평을 늘어놓았다.
"시간이 너무 많이 걸린 것 같군."
The apprentice was speechless.
Again, the barber said.
"Hairstyle influences a person's impression.
So the successful take time to have their hair done."
The customer also left with a smile on his face.
초보 이발사는 여전히 우두커니 서 있기만 했다.
그러자 이번에도 이발사가 나섰다.
"머리 모양은 사람의 인상을 좌우 한답니다.
그래서 성공한 사람들은
머리 다듬는 일에 많은 시간을 투자하지요."
그러자 세 번째 손님 역시
매우 밝은 표정으로 돌아갔다.
The fourth customer said after
his haircut was finished.
only a very talented barber could
cut my hair in 20 minutes!"
The apprentice stood in silence.
네 번째 손님이 왔고 그는 이발 후에
매우 만족스러운 얼굴로 말했다.
"참 솜씨가 좋으시네요.
겨우 20분 만에 말끔해졌어요."
이번에도 초보 이발사는 무슨 대답을 해야 할지 몰라
멍하니 서 있기만 했다.
The barber replied.
"There is a saying that time is money.
I'm also happy that you saved time."
The apprentice asked the barber about
the events of that evening.
The barber said.
이발사는 손님의 말에 맞장구를 치며 말했다.
"시간은 금이라고 하지 않습니까?
손님의 바쁜 시간을 단축했다니 저희 역시 매우 기쁘군요."
그날 저녁에 초보 이발사는 자신을 가르쳐준 이발사에게
오늘 일에 대해서 물었다.
이발사는 말했다.
"There are two sides to every question.
There are merit and demerit, gain and loss.
What's more, there is not a soul
who hates to hear praises.
I wanted to encourage and rebuke you,
not annoy customers.
"세상의 모든 사물에는 양면성이 있다네.
장점이 있으면 단점도 있고
얻는 것이 있으면 손해보는 것도 있지.
또한 세상에 칭찬을 싫어하는 사람은 없다네.
나는 손님의 기분을 상하게 하지 않으면서
자네에게 격려와 질책을 하고자 한 것뿐이라네."
