When I got a post in education at 43 after 20 years'
practice in the field, I was asked by my father.
교육계에서 일한 지 20년.
남들보다 늦은 나이 마흔 셋에 첫 부임을 한 내게,
아버지께서 물으셨다.
"What is the most important thing you will
teach your students?"
"아이에게 가르칠 것 중
가장 필요한 것은 무엇이겠니?"
'Honesty,' 'sincerity,' and various other
standards occurred to me. I tried to choose
the most important one.
나는 ' 정직', '성실' 등 다양한 말이 떠올랐고
가장 중요한 것을 찾느라 고심하고 있었다.
Then my father said.
"The most important lesson is endurance."
이때 아버지 께서는
"가장 중요한 것은 인내다."라고 말씀하셨다.
No matter what I think, there was no better answer.
아무리 생각해보아도 이보다 더한 답이 없었다.
I cannot reach the level of my father's knowledge
when it comes to education. He might have realized
this wisdom about education, raising his six children
with just one arm.
마흔 일곱 해,
외팔로 여섯 자식을 키우면서 터득한
아버지의 교육에 대한 지혜를
교육대학원까지 나온 나는 아직도 따라가지 못한다. |
