A storekeeper in New York
handed a coin to a beggar who was hawking a pencil.
뉴욕의 한 상인이 거리에서
연필을 내놓고 구걸하는 거지에게
동전을 주고 지나갔다.
Suddenly he remembered that he didn't get
the pencil, he went back and said to the beggar
after receiving it.
그런데 길을 가다 갑자기
연필을 받지 않은 게 생각나
거지에게 가 연필을 받고는 이렇게 말했다.
"I'm saying this because I am a vendor like you.
Isn't it good to attach a price tag
to every product of yours?"
"저도 당신과 같은 상인이라 한 말씀드립니다.
어떤 물건이든 팔려면 적당한 가격표를
붙이는 것이 좋지 않을까요?"
After years had passed a gentleman came up
and bowed deeply in front of the storekeeper.
몇 년이 지난 후 파티 장에서
점잖은 신사 한 명이
상인에게 허리를 굽히며 인사했다.
"You may not recognize me but I will never
forget you. You are the one who planted
the seed of self-confidence in me."
"선생님은 아마 저를 몰라보실 테지만
저는 선생님을 절대 잊을 수 없습니다.
선생님은 저에게 자신감을 심어주신 분입니다."
"I had been a beggar who was begging others
with a pencil.That was, until the very moment
you called me a vendor."
"저는 줄곧 연필을 두고
남에게 구걸하는 거지였습니다.
적어도 선생님께서 저를 상인이라 불러주셨던
순간까지 말입니다."
