There was a man who devoted his life to make
the world's best watch. He presented his son
a watch that he made at his coming-of-age ceremony.
평생을 최고의 시계를 만드는 데
헌신했던 사람이 있었습니다.
그는 아들의 성인식 날 손수 만든
시계를 선물하였습니다.
The watch consisted of copper for its
hour hand,silver for its minute hand,
and gold for its second hand.
그 시계는 특이하게도
시침은 동(銅)으로,
분침은 은(銀)으로,
초침은 금(金)으로 되어 있었습니다.
His son accepted it and asked him.
아들은 시계를 받아들고 아버지에게 물었습니다.
"The hour hand is the biggest among hands
and the second hand is the thinnest.
So I think gold would be most appropriate
for the hour hand and copper for the second hand."
"아버지,시침이 가장 크니까 금으로 장식하고
가장 가는 초침을 동으로 만들어야 하지 않나요?"
"You're wrong. The second hand is made from
gold for a reason. If you lose seconds,
you will lose time."
"아니다. 초침이야말로 금으로 만들어져야 한단다.
초를 잃는 것이야말로 세상의 모든 시간을
잃는 것과 마찬가지지."
He put the watch on his son's wrist and added.
그는 아들의 손목에 시계를 채워주며
이런 말을 덧붙였습니다.
"If one wastes seconds, he or she cannot
save hours and minutes. Remember that everything
that happens in this world depends on seconds.
You are an adult as of this moment. I hope you
are mindful of every second from now on."
"초를 아끼지 않는 사람이
어떻게 시간과 분을 아낄 수 있겠니?
세상의 흐름은 초에 의해 결정되는 것을 명심하고
너도 성인이 되는 만큼 1초의 시간에도
책임질 수 있는 사람이 되도록 해라." |
