This is a story from China's Song Dynasty.
중국 송나라 때의 일이다.
A man, who had some rare jewelry, decided to
contribute his jewelry to the high-ranking
government officer, Jahan The man had the jewelry
looked at by a jewelry judge.
희귀한 보석을 가지고 있던 한 사람이
당시 높은 벼슬에 있던 자한에게 바치려고
감정인을 찾아갔다.
"This is very rare, and is some precious jewelry
in the world." said the jewelry judge.
"세상에서 구하기 힘든 진귀한 보석"이라고
감정인은 말했다.
The man showed Jahan this jewelry and said
the judge's words.
이 사람은 자한에게 가서 보물을 보여주며
감정인의 말을 전했다.
Jahan, a man of great integrity, rejected his
gift and said.
청렴하고 고결한 인품을 지녔던 자한은
이를 거부하며 말했다.
"You consider your jewelry as a treasure, while I
consider my selfless mind as a treasure. If I receive
your jewelry, both of us would lose our treasures
at the same time, wouldn't we?"
"당신은 보석을 보배로 여기고 있으나,
나는 탐하지 않는 마음을 보배로 여기고 있습니다.
내가 이 보석을 받으면 우리 둘 다 보배를
잃어버리는 것이 되지 않겠습니까?" |
